Yup, picked up an abandoned Osakan kitten in September. It's really weird to be dealing with a young cat again, but this one is quite fun, aside from the shredded toilet paper and the chewed cashmere. No lambswool, even, she just heads straight for the most expensive stuff. Has learned to fetch, but if the toy mouse can't be found, will bring all sorts of stuff to me. Spaghetti noodles, last time.

Many minor annoyances lately. The animal rescue society wants a guarantor before I can adopt one of their mangy cats. Now, they're willing to let me foster cats, just not adopt any without the guarantor. That's just plain stupid. And they want a diagram of the fences around the house.. um, guys.. fences mean nothing to cats. And they should mean extra nothing to any cat I take, as I intend to keep it in the house.

Trimmed a bunch of trees on the weekend, including one that was getting way too tall. Bundling up the branches, discovered I'd cut off all the persimmons on the tree. This tree has never had any fruit before. Heck, it doesn't even look like a persimmon tree.

And this is really stupid. I can't change a lightbulb. I think I need to call someone in to do it for me. It's about 18 feet above the (stone) genkan floor, and I can't figure out a way to get to it, even if I buy an extension ladder. There's another light in an even worse position, too. Those suction cups on sticks aren't going to work, the covers are screwed on. The last time the light burned out, I had an electrician deal with it, but there were other, more sane reaons to have him in as well. He built a really shaky little platform off of the second floor landing to get to it..

And it's just way too hot.

My task for next week is proving that I didn't make any money last year. Oookay, that is pretty nigh impossible. No income = no tax returns, as no income. Nothing proves nothing, right? Maybe I can ask these wankers to prove they didn't abuse any unicorns last year. I'll betcha they did, though.

Otherwise, starting to shop around for a new cat. And maybe a dog, too. Unfortunately, if I do decide to get a dog, it'll have to be a small one. Small enough for me to carry if it gets sick, as we have no plans to get a car. Also really wanting a couple of chickens, will ask about that at the same time as the 'proof of nothingness' papers. The big pet shop in Yokohama sells owls and foxes and kangaroos.. keeping a few hens shouldn't be a problem. But you never know.

So, I'm pissed off. That TV was only in use for about 2 years! Using the old tube TV again, which has just as good a picture as the plasma. Although I think we hadn't configured the TV properly for HD channels.. but no way to check, now.

Went ayu fishing yesterday for the first time. Not sure why I thought the licences were too expensive, it was 1000 yen for a day, 10,000 for a year. Cheap.

Learned a bit about handling the long rods, caught a bunch of tiny fish. Nobody was catching bigger fish, maybe it was the sunshine. Not sure why we didn't use something like a herring jig, we were just snagging fish off the bottom. One by one. The 'use an ayu to catch an ayu' strategy doesn't work in the broad, shallow Sagami river, I was told.

Anyways, those fish were tasty fried in batter. MIL told me to buy 'Showa' brand tempura batter, apparently the other brands aren't so good.

Just so you know. Now going to try to unpack a few more boxes.

Alright, the butter situation is getting stupid. I managed to buy some, but not before having to MAKE some by spending a few hours shaking cream in tupperware. The shops have milk, yogurt, cheese and lots of cream, so this is no dairy shortage. I think this is just Walmart screwing around with us/the farmers. (In our town, Walmart/Seiyu is the only shop, unless you count the tiny stores.)

The shipment arrived yesterday, so I have tons of basmati and beer.. and somewhere in one of the 79 boxes is an Xacto knife. Currently hacking at them with blunt scissors. The moving guys were friendly enough but needed a lot of supervision. No, I don't want the carpet upside down. It took 5 of them to assemble the computer rack, mostly as they just ignored me and the instruction sheet. Oh well.. just hoping to get stuff united with power cords again. They sent the printer to the UK, put the cords in storage here. Cords to the TV and stereo were of course shipped to London, just in case some criminal broke into the storage room and tried to.. hook things up? I can only imagine, not being an evil genius type myself.

My visa is ready, going to get it next week. Very fast turnaround, only 13 business days.

She was telling story after story about this and that. Funniest one was her ex-husband getting my legally blind father to help line up the back stairway to the upstairs apartment. That thing was so fucking crooked that she had to convince her then husband to go get more wood so that she could knock down the monster. I always had wondered why she was out there smashing the fucking thing, but was too afraid to ask seeing as how she was looking mighty pissed off that day. Only took 30-odd years to find out. We laughed and laughed so much that the waiter started to get pissed off at us for making so much noise. Welcome to Canada!

Back in Japan! Carefully following the advice given by Yokohama Immigration, I have become an illegal immigrant. One of the officers at the airport wanted me to get on a plane to the US straight away, but an hour in the little room with friendlier types helped. The cat had cleared quarantine by the time I got out of there, and was generally pissed off about still being stuck in her cage.

On the bus to Yokohama, received the best 'welcome back' ever. The guy behind us had a cold, and spent the entire trip gargling snot. Really loudly. Right beside the bathroom, but hey, why blow your nose or spit that junk out when you can entertain the whole bus?

So, yeah, I am in LONDON, ONTARIO today. Weird place. I was born here, you see, and it changes in ways that are obvious to everybody except me. I still think of it as a WASP place that should blown up if only to start again and get it right. Bombs away!

Same shit, different day.

Another court date yesterday and, surprise surprise, a different judge!? In Japan, all the government positions get shuffled at the beginning of April so the judge we had for the last meetings fucked off and a new judge is getting up to speed on the case now. The new judge is a woman so she and my chick lawyer have a sexual bond.

Old Dirty Bastard submitted another affidavit *3 days before* this court date, yesterday. No substance to it, whatsoever, and he's still crying that I quit voluntarily, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary.

Judge and ODB. For some reason, he is sitting next to the judge, even though Japanese etiquette dictates that the lawyers should sit next to the judge.

"Do you have ANY evidence that he[me] quit?"
-Yes, of course! He says so right here in this email! See? He uses the word, 'Yameru'. I want to ask him Exactly what he meant by that.
"I believe he already responded to that in his affidavit."
I pipe in, "And we already covered this in the Labour Court."
-But! He says 'yameru' right here.
"In context, it clearly says that he may be forced to quit if you do not follow labour law with respect to his contract."
-No it doesn't, it's saying that he will quit whenever he wants to. I don't understand what is going on.

Nice, he contradicted the judge.

Judge to ODB lawyer, "This is simply a clear cut case of abusive termination. Can you produce any evidence that he resigned voluntarily?"
-Uhhh, yes, we should be able to find something.
"How long will it take you, one month?"
-Perhaps we can find something in one month.
"Are you willing to let the court negotiate a settlement after you have produced this key piece of evidence?"
-Yes, may the court's will be done
"Okay, how is next month, May 27th?"

Everybody says no problem, morning is best between 10-12pm.
ODB does this thing while everybody has already put their stamp on the 27th where he slowly unzips his briefcase, profers his schedule book and leafs through the pages. We all sit, quietly anticipating his utterance.
"Okay, morning of 27th."

The court reporter says something to the judge about chourei or whatever and the judge says, "Ahhh, is it alright if we start from 10:30am instead?"
ODB -Uhhhh, that doesn't work for me.
"Does afternoon work for you?"
At this point his lawyer is tugging on his arm, entreating him to be more cooperative.
-Yes, from 4pm
"Okay, 4pm everybody? Alright, see you then. And ODB, by the way, please submit any documents to the court 1 week before the meeting so we have time to review them. Understand? One week."

New judge, so we have to go through another court date while she susses out the situation. Coming up on 17 months now.
